The merger of various components in the decentralized energy network is difficult. Everyone involved speaks different languages and therefore can hardly communicate with the other. WAGO telecontrol systems provide a remedy: They meet the requirements of the VHPready communication standard and thus ensure problem-free connection of components to the decentral energy systems. The current version of the specification is the VHPready 4.0, which enables the control and communication in decentral energy systems and, as an interpreter, ensures that the control room and the components understand each other.
VHPready standardizes the objects and variables of different communication protocols and declares them uniquely. Instead of using a system-specific set of variables, VHPready communicates via predefined profiles with uniform data point lists. In addition to communication, VHPready also defines domain-specific specifications such as specifications for operating behavior and reaction times. That provides the possibility to control plants via timetables and allows the control room to transfer control parameters to the system for a period of 24 hours as a command / record / message / file.
Energy suppliers such as Vattenfall and the Municipel Utility-Cooperation Trianel already use WAGO technology in their virtual power plants, as it is crucial for them that the controllers are programmable, flexible and allow communication in accordance with IEC 60870-5-104 or IEC 61850. The compact and modular telecontrollers from WAGO also offer a wide variety of protocols such as PROFIBUS, CAN, BACnet or MODBUS. This allows them to be used in decentral energy systems as gateways for most technical units in the field. With digital / analogue input and output terminals that can be modularly mounted, as well as more than 500 additional function modules, WAGO can for example guarantee the complete management of the plant control of a virtual power plant.
Data security plays a central role for WAGO. As of version VHPready 4.0, the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol or an otherwise TCP / IP-based, object-oriented approach in accordance with IEC 61850-7-420 forms the communications technology basis of WAGO telecontrollers. The security of the data transmission is ensured by the establishment of a virtual private network (VPN) based on OpenVPN with SSL / TLS connections (Transport Sockets Layer, Transport Layer Security). SNTP / NTP (Simple Time Protocol / Network Time Protocol) is used for the time synchronization. From the WAGO controller, a VPN tunnel can be set up directly via OpenVPN or IPsec in order to transmit encrypted data to the control center and receive it from there. WAGO not only meets the network operators' IT security requirements, but also allows the system to be hardened according to the requirements of the BDEW White Paper.
